I took inspiration from the instructional diagrams in “Winning Basketball: Individual Play and Team Strategy” written and illustrated by William T. “Buck” Lai in 1955 to create these images of old-school hoopers. Here’s Boogie Cousins in the triple threat,

Karl-Anthony Towns utilizing the hook, and

Jahlil Okafor passing out of the pivot.

These images were featured in Austin Peters’ story “The Modern Big Man: What’s Old is New” on The Step Back.
Now Rajon Rondo’s chest pass,

and Pistol Pete’s behind-the-back pass.

Here’s the first Superteam.

Check out more pretty projects.
